Aliyah from Mariupol

Mariupol has become a terrible symbol of the war in Ukraine. 80% of the city lies in complete ruin. More than a half of 450,000 (the former population of Mariupol) has become refugees. Over 20,000 of people died in the city.

Until humanitarian corridors were open, people used to live in basements of buildings without water, electricity supply, heating or communication means. While there was snow, it was the source of water for drinking. When the snow was gone, people started to drain water from heating pipes. This technical water was used for drinking and cooking. This horror had lasted for about 2 months.

11 persons who received help from us had gone through this dread. Among them, there are Dmitriy Mizrakhi, 10 months old, Igor Senchuk, 4, and Andrey Yudelman, 10. Now, they all are refugees who want to make Aliyah. But the way towards the Promised Land is still shut for them. All their documents are back there, under the ruins of their collapsed homes.

Requests to archives were made to confirm these poor people’s Jewish origin. While they are here, in Zaporizhya, they need to wait until extracts from archives arrive and so they will confirm their repatriation right. How long? Maybe, it will take 2 to 3 weeks, maybe, it will take longer. But no sooner will the path towards the Promised Land be open for them. There are hundreds of such refugees. They all wait and hope… there’s nothing else can they do but pray and hope…
