About 5,000,000 people have migrated from Ukraine within the recent 3 years. It’s like the entire population of such countries like Norway or Finland would one day leave their homeland. The biggest number of migrants headed for Russia, Germany, Poland, Italy, France, Sweden, and Belorussia. Every minute two citizens of Ukraine leave for other countries in search for work. This is how big the migration from Ukraine is now.
Of course, there are many Jewish people among the migrants from Ukraine but their way leads to their historical motherland. Aliyah from Ukraine makes about 40% of all repatriates who arrive at Israel.
There are numerous reasons for such an exodus from Ukraine. Among them, there is the war, the economic collapse, the political instability, no social care for citizens of the country and no freedom of speech. However, the Jewish migration from Ukraine has one more serious ground and this ground is anti-Semitism.
The desecration of Jewish tombs, memorials and cultural objects has been only a prelude for the anti-Semitic program of neo-Nazi. They have not rejected their motto “Ukraine is for Ukrainians” and follow it closely. The next stage is threat to lives.
We know it from the history of WWII that Jewish and Gipsy massacres happened almost simultaneously. This year in Ukraine, pogroms among the local Gipsy settlements happen with a horrible regularity and impunity.
Unknown persons attacked a Gipsy settlement on the Lvov city edge at night on June 24. Three adults and one child (10) were wounded with knives and one Zakarpatye Gipsy man, David Papa (24) was killed.
Jewish people accepted it as a warning for themselves.
Politicians and social organizations in Europe and USA have met the events in Ukraine with indignation. The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Michele Nicoletti has characterized the events as a racist attack. Yet, all these official statements and turning to Ukrainian Government are similar to a lone voice in the wilderness. The Ukrainian Government has many reasons not to antagonize the armed gangs of neo-Nazi. This is why Jewish people and Gipsy are totally unprotected in Ukraine.
Yet, Jewish people have their own safe haven. The Lord has given them the Promised Land. Now, thanks to you, another small stream of olim headed for it. Let’s pray that all of them gain their true happiness there.
